Smart lock installation in Toronto is mostly a measuring job before it is an electronics job. Three numbers decide whether a keypad or smart deadbolt will fit your door: the thickness of the door, the backset, and the size of the existing bore. Most standard Canadian residential doors take one without modification.

Send a photograph of the edge of your door when you call and we can usually tell you before anything is ordered. That is a better order of operations than buying the lock first and finding out afterwards.

Will a smart lock fit your door?

Door thickness is the first check. Most exterior doors here are 1 and 3 quarter inches, which nearly every smart deadbolt supports, but solid doors and some heritage doors are thicker and need a longer spindle kit.

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the bore, and it is almost always either 2 and 3 eighths or 2 and 3 quarter inches. Getting it wrong means the bolt does not reach.

The bore itself is normally 2 and an eighth inches. A door with a smaller or an unusually placed bore needs enlarging, which is not reversible, so it is a decision to take deliberately.

Keypad deadbolts, app locks, and what the difference is

A keypad deadbolt is a lock with a code. No network, no app, no account, and nothing to go wrong when your internet does. For most households that is the whole benefit of a smart lock without any of the maintenance.

A connected lock adds remote unlocking, access logs, and temporary codes you can issue and revoke. That is genuinely useful for a rental, a short-term let, or a house with cleaners and dog walkers coming and going. It also means a lock with firmware, an account, and a dependency on your Wi-Fi.

Batteries, power cuts, and the key override

Nearly every smart deadbolt sold in Canada keeps a physical key override, and most warn for weeks before the batteries are flat. Keep that override key somewhere off the property, because a spare key inside the house it opens is not a spare key.

A lock with no key override is a deliberate design choice by the manufacturer, not an oversight. If you are looking at one, we will point it out before you buy.

Smart locks on condo doors

Check your condo declaration before ordering. Some corporations restrict what may be fitted on the corridor side of a unit door, and a few require the door to stay on the building keyway, which rules out any lock without a cylinder.

Five minutes with the property manager beforehand saves an installation that has to be reversed afterwards.
