The doors in York
York has some of the oldest houses we work on. Much of Silverthorn, Fairbank, and Rockcliffe-Smythe is 1920s to 1940s detached and semi-detached stock, and a large share of it has been divided into two or three rented units over the years, each with a door that was added at a different time to a different standard. Eglinton West and Weston Road carry rows of small independent storefronts, most on commercial cylinders that have been rekeyed by several different hands.
What we get called for in York
Multi-unit rekeys are the steady work here, typically a landlord separating units that have drifted onto a shared key. Alongside that we get older mortise locks that have finally seized, storefront cylinder changes along Eglinton West and Weston Road, and lockouts at all hours.
Worth knowing before you call
Mortise locks turn up constantly in York and they are worth understanding before you replace anything. A mortise is the long rectangular case set into the edge of the door, not a round cylinder bored through it. In most cases the case is fine and only the cylinder needs changing, which keeps the original door intact and costs less than converting the door to modern hardware. It is one of the few jobs where the older lock is often the better thing to keep.

Locksmith in York: common questions
Can you cut a new key for an old mortise lock?
Often yes. If the cylinder takes a keyway that is still made, a key can be cut and the lock rekeyed to it. Some pre-war profiles are genuinely obsolete, and in that case the cylinder is changed for a current one while the original mortise case and the door stay as they are.
Can you set up one key for an owner across several units?
Yes. Each unit keeps its own key that opens only its own door, and a separate master key opens all of them for you. That is standard practice for a divided house and it is set up at the time of the rekey rather than as extra work afterwards.
