The doors in Toronto

Downtown Toronto is two different lock problems in one postal code. Above Front Street there are glass condo towers where the unit door is a builder deadbolt, the lobby is a fob, and the mailbox is a small wafer lock that nobody thinks about until the key snaps in it. Away from the core, Cabbagetown, Riverdale, and the Annex are full of Victorian semis with original mortise hardware, and Parkdale and the Junction have large old houses long since split into three or four rented units, each with its own door.

What we get called for in Toronto

The two calls we get most often in downtown Toronto are condo lockouts, where the unit key is inside and the concierge cannot legally open the door, and storefront work along Queen West, King West, and Yonge, where a commercial cylinder has worn to the point that the key turns halfway and stops. Mailbox and letter slot locks in older apartment buildings come a close third.

Worth knowing before you call

Condo buildings matter here. Most Toronto boards will not let a technician touch a unit door until the concierge has seen identification that ties you to the suite, and some require the property manager on site for anything involving the common area hardware. Have that ready when you call and the visit is straightforward. If the building uses a restricted keyway on the common doors, that key can usually only be cut through the building's own supplier, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than after arriving.

Locksmith in Toronto: common questions

Do you cover downtown Toronto overnight?

Yes. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, holidays included, and a downtown address is handled on the same basis as any other. Call and give us the street address, the buzzer or unit number, and whether the problem is the unit door, the lobby, or the mailbox.

My key snapped off in an old Cabbagetown front door. Is the lock ruined?

Usually not. If the broken half is left where it is, the piece inside the cylinder can normally be extracted and the same cylinder put back into service. On Victorian doors the original mortise case is often still perfectly sound, and at worst only the cylinder inside it needs replacing rather than the whole lock or the door.

Something not covered here? Call (289) 460-1916 and ask. We would rather answer it on the phone than have you guess.

Other cities we cover

Not in Toronto? We cover nine other cities across the Greater Toronto Area from the same shop in North York. If your address is near a boundary, call (289) 460-1916 and we will confirm it.
